Getting Ready for the New School Year

It sure has been a great summer with lots to do in and around your West Hills apartment, but summer is nearing an end and it is time to get ready for the new school year.  This year school starts on Tuesday August 18th.

Many of us will remember the anxiety of going back to school or starting in a new school; here are some tips for helping your child transition to the new school year.

  • Make it a Team Effort – Most schools have websites that include information and articles about the school’s academics, sports, clubs, art, music and more. Go through the site together and talk about the types of programs that your child may want to participate in.  There really is something for everyone.
  • Share in the Team Spirit – Check out your school’s colors and mascots. Try to research why the mascot was designated, look for images and if available purchase a sweat shirt or t-shirt for you and your child.  Becoming part of the team will help foster your child’s enthusiasm.
  • Visit the School – Many schools offer tours, but if they don’t take one yourself. If your child is younger go to the playground and swing on the swings.  Locate their classroom and let them know where they will arrive and leave each day.  Older kids can benefit from a tour as well.  Visiting the school ahead of time will make it more familiar and ease their apprehension.
  • Take a Trial Run – Set your alarm and do a practice run. If your child will be taking the bus, set your alarm, get up have breakfast, get dressed and get to the bus stop on time.  If your child will be walking, walk the route, pointing out streets, stop signs, etc.  For those who have children that are riding to school, take a ride with them, review parking procedures and rules.
  • Set Expectations – Your child should understand what you expect from them as far as bed time, grades, homework and other rules. Set them early so that you get a good start.
  • Plan a Back to School Trip/Activity – One way to garner enthusiasm for going back to school is to plan something exciting. Plan a shopping trip or go out to dinner or make pizza, make it fun and make it centered around school.
  • Get Enough Zs – Studies say that growing children require a great deal of sleep. Some experts recommend 10 hours for children from 6 – 12 and between 8 to 10 for teens.
  • Talk it Out – Once school starts sit down with your child (or tween or teen) and ask them about their day. Not the old “how was your day” which will illicit a short response, but about the classroom, teachers’ names, where they sit, can they hear or see the board (or screen), about friends, lunch .. be specific.  If something isn’t going well, take action and work together for a solution.

Following these tips will make your school year more productive and ease apprehension about a new school year.
